Proxmox Mail Gateway:Get Started

Proxmox Mail Gateway is a full-featured, open-source mail proxy and protects your mail server from spam, viruses, trojans, and phishing emails. It is deployed between the firewall and your internal mail server where it analyzes and filters incoming as well as outgoing email traffic. This reduces the load on your servers and helps to increase resource utilization.

As a complete operating system, the installation ISO image includes everything you need to install and run the platform in only a few minutes. You can install Proxmox Mail Gateway on dedicated hardware or alternatively on a virtual host in all of the major virtualization platforms.

Take a look at the system requirements, then follow the steps below or read the detailed Installation Guide for Proxmox Mail Gateway.

After successful installation, check out the article Getting started with Proxmox Mail Gateway. This guide includes a small set of adaptations how to improve the detection accuracy and user experience of the Mail Gateway solution.

Download and Install

1.Download ISO image

The ISO image file is an image of a disk. Download and copy it to a USB flash drive or CD/DVD in order to use it.

2.Boot from USB or CD/DVD

Press 'Enter' to start the installation wizard on your dedicated hardware.

If you need help with the installation, read the documentation or get a subscription for technical support.

3.Configure via GUI

After the installation, start the configuration of your Proxmox Mail Gateway via the web-based user interface.

Note: Proxmox Mail Gateway is a bare-metal installer, please be aware that the complete server is used and existing data on the selected disks will be removed.

System Requirements

Recommended Hardware

(depending on your email traffic and settings)

  • Multicore CPU: 64bit (Intel 64 or AMD64), for use as virtual machine activate Intel VT/AMD-V CPU flag
  • 4 GB RAM
  • Bootable CD-ROM-drive or USB boot support
  • Monitor with a resolution of 1024x768 for the installation
  • 1 Gbps Ethernet network interface card
  • Storage: at least 8 GB free disk space, best setup with redundancy, use hardware RAID controller with battery backed write cache (“BBU”) or ZFS. ZFS is not compatible with a hardware RAID controller. For best performance use Enterprise class SSD with power loss protection.

Minimum Hardware

  • CPU: 64bit (Intel 64 or AMD64)
  • 2 GB RAM
  • Bootable CD-ROM-drive or USB boot support
  • Monitor with a resolution of 1024x768 for the installation
  • Hard disk with at least 8 GB of disk space
  • Ethernet network interface card

Supported web browsers for accessing the web interface

To use the web-based user interface we recommend one of the following browsers:

  • Firefox, a release of the current year, or the latest Extended Support Release
  • Chrome, a release of the current year
  • Microsoft's currently supported version of Edge
  • Safari, a release of the current year

Installation on a virtual host

To deploy Proxmox Mail Gateway on a virtualization platform you can use the same resource settings like on a physical hardware. The following platforms are supported:

  • Proxmox Virtual Environment
  • VMware vSphere
  • Hyper-V
  • KVM
  • Virtual box
  • Citrix Hypervisor
  • LXC container
  • ...and others supporting Debian Linux as guest OS

If you want more information about using your Proxmox Mail Gateway on a virtual host, please contact us.

Virtual Appliance

Install Proxmox Mail Gateway as a virtual appliance. A virtual appliance is a fully pre-installed and pre-configured application and operating system environment that runs on an isolated environment known as a virtual machine. Proxmox Mail Gateway is tested and validated for all major virtualization technologies. This simplifies installation and maintenance and enables fast deployment.

Supported virtualization platforms

  • Proxmox Virtual Environment
  • VMware vSphere
  • Microsoft Hyper-V
  • KVM
  • VirtualBox
  • Citrix Hypervisor
  • Container (for example LXC)
  • ...and other solutions supporting Debian Linux as guest OS

Installing on a VM or container

You can easily run Proxmox Mail Gateway on a virtual machine (KVM) or a container in Proxmox Virtual Environment. These virtualization technology are seamlessly integrated into Proxmox VE.

Proxmox Mail Gateway and VMware products

Proxmox Mail Gateway runs perfectly on VMware vSphere.

Support statement for VMware vSphere installations:

Proxmox will provide support for Proxmox Mail Gateway running in a VMware virtual environment in an identical manner as with Proxmox Mail Gateway running on any other major x86 based systems, without initially requiring reproduction of issues on native hardware. Should the Proxmox support team suspect that the virtualization layer is the root cause of an incident; the customer will be required to contact the appropriate VMware support provider to resolve the VMware issue. While Proxmox products are expected to function properly in a VMware virtual environment, there may be performance implications which can invalidate Proxmox typical sizing and recommendations.
