Proxmox Backup Server is an enterprise-class, client-server backup package which provides strong encryption without compromising on speed or flexibility. The Backup Server is based on a minimal Debian GNU/Linux distribution with built-in ZFS support. Thus, it can be installed on bare-metal, using the downloadable ISO image.
The backup server comes stocked with all the essential management tools you need, as well as an easy-to-use, web-based interface. This allows for simple, out-of-the-box management of your server, either through the command line or a standard web browser.
Proxmox Backup Server is licensed under the GNU AGPLv3 and is open for downloading and using. It is recommended that the server runs on dedicated hardware rather than being run as a virtualized instance.

System Requirements
When running Proxmox Backup Server in a production environment, you will need high quality server equipment to ensure that your backed up data is safe.
Recommended Hardware
For a production setup, we recommend dedicated hardware. This is especially important for critical tasks like backups where many hosts/VMs/containers save their critical data.
·32 GiB, or more, free storage space
·Use a hardware RAID with battery protected write cache (BBU) or a redundant ZFS setup (ZFS is not compatible with a hardware RAID controller).
·Prefer fast storage that delivers high IOPS for random IO workloads; use only enterprise SSDs for best results.
·If HDDs are used: Using a metadata cache is highly recommended, for example, add a ZFS special device mirror.
For Evaluation
These minimum requirements are for evaluation purposes only and should not be used in production.
Supported web browsers for accessing the web interface

Install Proxmox Backup Server on a Debian System
If you want, you can install Proxmox on top of a running Debian 64-bit system. This is especially interesting, if you want to have a custom partition layout.
