PRTG VMware monitoring

Professional all-in-one VMware monitoring software

VMware monitoring with PRTG

What is VMware monitoring?

VMware monitoring allows you to keep a constant eye on important application and performance data of your virtual machine (VM). This includes parameters like CPU load, memory usage or downtime. By monitoring VMware you are always up to date with the performance of your virtual machines.

Virtualization is a crucial part of many IT environments and an effective way to reduce expenses while boosting efficiency and flexibility of your business. It allows you to distribute applications and databases over different servers, networks, and locations. To avoid downtimes and ensure a good overall performance, you should monitor your VMware servers and all of your virtual machines.

VMware Monitoring with PRTG allows you to keep track of all parts of your virtual environment - from the host server to the applications running on each VM.

Advantages of a professional virtualization monitoring

Keep track of everything

Virtualization is only a good idea if you can keep an eye on CPU load, disk usage, performance, and network utilization of your VM. If there's an issue there, then there will also be an issue with the virtual machines - which means that soon you'll find yourself struggling with compounding problems. With a comprehensive monitoring tool, any potential trouble spots will be visible at all times.

Be informed of issues promptly

If too many virtual machines run on one host, this can lead to system overload and performance issues. With PRTG Network Monitor, you can set customized thresholds at 75%, for example. If these thresholds are crossed, PRTG sends a notification by e-mail, SMS, Push or API - whatever you'd like. And so you learn about problems before your clients or coworkers are aware that anything is wrong.

Here's what VMware monitoring looks like in PRTG

PRTG:Customizable VMware performance monitoring software

We have been a certified technology partner of VMware for several years. This gives us detailed insight into VMware. Thanks to our specific device templates, we can quickly and easily integrate our PRTG Network Monitor into your infrastructure.

This occurs with the help of our "sensors" - measuring points which monitor particular aspects of a device like CPU load or memory allocation. Using these, PRTG can monitor every detail of your virtual environment. The following sensors are currently available for monitoring VMware:

PRTG makes VMware monitoring easy

VMware Virtual Machine (SOAP) Sensor

Monitors a virtual machine (VM) on a VMware host server via Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP). This sensor displays a single virtual machine's CPU load and memory usage, disk read and write speed, and network transmission speed.

VMware Host Hardware (WBEM) Sensor

With the PRTG VMware Host Hardware sensors, you can monitor the performance of an ESX/ESXi server. This sensor displays the host server's temperature, current power consumption, fan rotations per minute (RPM), battery voltage, and health status.

VMware Host Hardware Status (SOAP) Sensor

The PRTG VMware Host Hardware Status sensor monitors the health of your host system. The sensor displays the total number of objects in "normal," "warning," and "alert," status just as the vSphere client reports.

VMware Datastore (SOAP) Sensor

Use the VMware Datastore sensor to keep an eye on hard drive usage and the status of your data store.

VMware Host Performance (SOAP) Sensor

The VMware Host Performance (SOAP) sensor monitors a VMware host server using Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP).

Dell EMC Unity VMware Datastore v2 Sensor

The Dell EMC Unity VMware Datastore v2 sensor monitors a VMware datastore on a Dell EMC storage system via the Representational State Transfer (REST) application programming interface (API).

Applications consolidated through virtualization

Reliable ESX and VM monitoring

While ESX Host Server sensors only work directly with your VMware ESX 5+ server and its parent devices, you can use the PRTG VMware Virtual Machine (SOAP) sensor in two different ways:

l To communicate directly with a VMware ESX (i) host server in order to monitor the virtual machines running on it

l To communicate with a VMware vCenter installation in order to monitor all of the virtual machines being managed by the vCenter server

Monitoring the vCenter server allows you to continue to monitor virtual machines directly even after they change physical hosts with vMotion.

We use VMware for our own environments, every day. This provides us with deep understanding of an administrator's problems and needs with respect to VMware monitoring.

5 good reasonsto virtualize

Better utilization

Unvirtualized servers often use less than 20% of the server capacity. This means that administrators can increase their server utilization by up to 80% by virtualizing.

More flexibility

If you need more capacity in the short term, all it takes is a few mouse clicks. This saves time and is significantly more flexible. As a result, you can generally avoid any cumbersome purchasing transactions.

Reduced energy costs

Every kilowatt used generates warmth and thus requires corresponding cooling. This, in turn, creates high energy

costs and the service life of the data center is reduced.

Reduced maintenance costs

Server maintenance costs and expenses are also reduced with virtualization. It is possible to reduce the footprint of your hardware, which means you'll also save on space costs.

The new role of the administrator

With a virtualization strategy, administrators show that they act with costs in mind. They use new technology and are among the innovators. With monitoring, they have total control over any potential system failures - and thereby reduce risks.

Notification system: Be alerted quickly

Flexible

PRTG features a variety of alert types: E-mail, SMS, Pager, Apps, running an external application, etc. You can specify when and how each person is to be informed about network issues. To do so, you can add contacts and edit, delete, or pause your notifications at any time.

Integrated

The notification system is built into the monitoring software and is available at no extra charge. Because of its integrated quality, configuring the alert feature is done in just a few clicks.

Proactive

PRTG won't wait to let you know if "VMware is on fire." You define your own thresholds. If these are crossed, you'll receive a corresponding notification. This means you can intervene promptly before clients or coworkers are aware of any problems.
