UltraEdit & UEStudio 2025.0 is now ready to download and install. This release comes with a range of new capabilities covering most popular requests such as Git integration, column mode, hex mode and many other areas of the application.

Another highlight of this release is the preview for our Plugin SDK including its counterpart plugin manager and plugin Wizard. This includes pre-installable examples and documentation so you can test out the new plugin architecture. Additionally, you can also have browser-based webtools integrated in the same way.

There’s a lot to unpack in this release so continue reading this blog post for the complete breakdown.

Git Integration

UltraEdit (the text editor) now also has integrated source control management (SCM) using Git that is supported out-of-the-box. This means that similar to UEStudio, you can now manage, pull, and commit source control changes right inside UltraEdit.

Git integration is now available in the UltraEdit text editor as of UE 2025.0.

This new integration widens the possible use cases of the editor and it can significantly enhance the workflow of developers and writers by streamlining version control processes directly within the editing environment. Perform essential Git operations such as committing changes, pushing updates, pulling the latest versions, and managing branches without leaving the editor.

This seamless integration is particularly beneficial for collaborative projects, where tracking changes and managing contributions from multiple team members is crucial. Additionally, having Git functionality embedded in UltraEdit, alongside other integrations such as the Pieces AI Copilot and new WebTools integration (more on this later) may help with the growing demand for both coding and non-coding tasks.

Moreover, the inclusion of Git integration in UltraEdit democratizes access to version control for a broader audience, including those who may not be familiar with command-line interfaces or standalone Git clients. This accessibility can encourage more users to adopt best practices in version control, leading to more organized and efficient project management.

Plugin software development kit (SDK)

Great news for developers and coders looking to add versatility to their editor. You can now cherry pick features and truly make your own editor with the new plugin SDK that is introduced in UltraEdit 2025.0.

This is the first public preview version of the architecture and technology we demonstrated way back in UltraEdit 2023

As a refresher, UltraEdit’s plugin architecture allows the developers (us) and users to create features and install them not unlike other text editor plugins. This allows greater flexibility and freedom to customize what features are available in the text editor.

Users can use the new plugin SDK to create their own plugins/features, and if they want to share it with the community, they can do so as well. The main difference however is that instead of an open marketplace, these plugins will need to be vetted and verified by the developers of UltraEdit before they are available for download. Options for a public plugin marketplace are also being considered, but that will necessitate finding a safe and secure solution that meets our standards.

This should provide many of the benefits of having a plugin ecosystem while still being confident about the providence and security of the plugins.

NOTE: The plugin SDK is in preview for now and will undergo a lot of testing and improvements before a stable version is released. However, if a user would like to create and add their own functionality to UE, they can do so now.

UltraEdit’s installation wizard for plugins.

Embedded browser with new webtools plugin

This new feature is based on the above mentioned plugin architecture. It adds a new browser-based section from a handful of selected websites/apps that will extend specialized functions of the editor.

A user can simply add a website as a dockable window and they will be able to use whatever functionality that webtool provides. A good example is when Bradley Hawkins (UE product manager) showcased the Regex 101 website as a dockable window plugin in a recent webinar

Regex 101 webtool added as a dockable window inside UltraEdit

Currently, we have a list of available webtools including ChatGPT, Regex 101, and more. We will continue expanding this list so users can add/remove sites as if they were features added by plugins natively.

Other notable improvements and bug fixes:

UE 2025.0 also addresses the minor bugs and one-off user requests for an overall better user experience. The highlight improvements involve the visual consistency and usability of the HEX selection dialog, making it easier for users to interact with and select hexadecimal data.

We’ve also improved prompts in the command palette and similar dialogs with “Show hints” and improved text field labels to enhance user experience and accessibility. Also fixed the behavior for URL underlining and highlighting.

Lastly, and update for those using column mode frequently for non-English unicode characters (i.e. characters not A-Z). These characters can sometimes cause trouble with alignment when selecting columns and doing column functions. With this update, the alignment behavior should now be more consistent.

Here is a list of other general fixes and quality-of-life improvements based upon user reports and requests. If you encounter any issues or unwanted behavior, please report them to support@ultraedit.com.

What’s Next for UltraEdit?

You’ve reached the end of UE 2025.0 updates. Dot year releases such as this one are usually the most important updates in our product release cycle. We tend to include major changes and improvements at the start of the cycle, so you can expect that the subsequent release will be focused on fine tuning and fixing potential bugs in previous releases.

In terms of features, we are also planning on expanding our Pieces for Developers AI integration to provide more intelligent and context-aware output.

Lastly, we plan on improving our EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) support starting with better syntax highlighting support, specialized EDI-based plugins, and maybe even integrating AI services specific for EDI work.

Of course none of these are truly set in stone until they make the public release, so the best thing you can do is send us an email and let us know which ones we should work on first!

That should be most of what we’re happy to share at this point. For now, please enjoy the release and we’re excited to see how you guys work with our new plugin and webtools SDK preview.

Happy editing!
